This secluded retreat in Malua Bay nestled among the trees and native vegetation, just a short stroll from McKenzies Beach sits hidden from the outside world.
Constructed on bushfire prone land recently scorched by bushfire, we collaborated extensively with specialists in bushfire, environmental, geotech, and wastewater management to adhere to strict measures enforced by Council and NSW Fire Services.
The building embraces the natural topography, providing subtle level changes internally between various zones. With anatomy of extensive sustainable elements, the house is self-reliant. These features include a fully off-the-grid solar-powered electrical system, rainwater collection tanks, low-water use native planting, composting toilets, and more.
This project was both a test of will; and a measure of resilience of client, builder and architect. Against hurdles of nature, Covid and planning controls, it serves as an example of adversity breeding reward.
